Ariana Grande released her latest song “boyfriend” early Friday morning, and we’re not surprised that it’s a hit. The single features her recurring collaborators Social House, who are also behind “7 Rings” and “Thank U, Next.”
“boyfriend” is an effortlessly catchy R&B-pop hybrid, much like her other recent chart toppers. It expertly conveys the torturous phase in relationships when hearts are on the line but before titles have been assigned.
“You ain’t my boyfriend, and I ain’t your girlfriend,” sings Grande. “But you don’t want me to see nobody else, and I don’t want you to see nobody.”
Not only did she crush the song, but she immediately blessed us with the gift of a music video. The cinematic journey involves a bow and arrow, a lot of hair and a few moments that make you wonder if Quentin Tarantino was involved.
According to Ari, the song “captures a common theme in the lives of so many people.” On Twitter, she said she was inspired by people who “want to feel love but don’t want to define their relationship & have trouble fully committing or trusting or allowing themselves to fully love someone. Even tho they want to.”
