Billie Eilish leads the pop rebellion with nightmarish visuals and throat-throbbing rhythms. New song “everything i wanted” falls quite in line with her brand – a bruised, piano song that quickly escalates with a backbeat and harrowing thematic through line. “I tried to scream, but my head was underwater / They called me weak like I’m not just somebody’s daughter,” she sings.
The song, co-written with her brother FINNEAS, speaks to a very real, very frightening dream Eilish had. “I literally had a dream that I killed myself and nobody cared and all of my best friends and people that I worked with basically came out in public and said, like, ‘Oh, we never liked her,’” the singer told Annie Mac on the BBC program Future Sounds.
Eilish sinks her whole body into the song’s soft undercurrent. It’s as appropriately pensive and wonderfully strange that it’ll hook you in by the hair. “But when I wake up, I see you with me,” she sings, turning to her loyalty, love and adoration to her brother. Through it all, their connection will keep them alive.
