In the throes of modern anxieties, time seems to completely halt. There appears to be no way out but further into the static. Pop juggernaut Gabrielle Aplin peels back the layers of her own mental state on the absolutely stunning “One of Those Days.”
Piano rises in sharp chords to guide her on her way. It’s plaintive in the beginning, the first waters of anxiety flooding her brain, and in the crescendo, she nearly drowns but comes to find herself in the light of a new day. “Maybe I will never change / Tell me I’m going through a phase / ‘Cause it’s just one of those days / When grace seems far away,” she confronts.
The ballad is a centerpiece to Aplin’s new album, Dear Happy.
