David Quinn is crucially underrated. He’s the kind of storyteller that can make you feel on a very deep level, excavating the darkness of human desires. With “Born to Lose,” the first appetizer to his second album, he runs through a brushy thicket of electrifying rock guitar.
“I’m living with the same ole kind of blues / Feeling like I was just born to lose,” he sighs. The song, dealing with his ongoing depression, grows swollen sorrow. And while his ongoing struggles may never dissipate, he can at least funnel it back into his work, and in turn, inspire the rest of us to find that silver lining.
