You know when you hear a voice and it just bowls you over? Raye Zaragoza gives me the same exact feeling as the likes of Emily Scott Robinson and Courtney Marie Andrews. Voices so angelic and evocative, it’s like they’re harboring long buried, cherished secrets.
With “Ghosts of Houston Street,” the closer on her new album Woman of Color, Zaragoza winds through her “old street, the only home I’ve ever had,” she crows. It’s mournful, as saying goodbye to home one last time often is, yet she celebrates how influential it became to her life. What a crushing performance.
