Candi Carpenter is one of those once in a lifetime talents. Since “Burn the Bed,” which feels like eons ago now, the singer-songwriter has been honing her craft. It all seems to come to head with “Dirt Around the Tree,” a wonderfully written and performed tune, full of Brandi Carlile’s succulent harmony work.
Carpenter carves her words with every ounce of pain, and the wisdom she’s since gained, from her youth. “My mother always told me life’s not fair / That’s probably why I ran away,” she sings. “I don’t think I felt safe at home / And I don’t think that’s ever going to change.”
