Ella Isaacson – “Maybelline”

We all put up facades when we don’t want the world to see what a mess we are underneath. On her new song “Maybelline,” pop singer-songwriter Ella Isaacson confesses she too hides parts of herself away from the world. “All I am is smoke and mirrors and maybelline,” she sings. “I’m not really here / No, this ain’t really me.”

Her words sting. It’s the collective misery, born out of not only 2020 but the digital age as it stands, that cuts deep. “Ain’t no way to go through life without compromise,” she laments with an inescapable heaviness.
