“George Strait or Georg Gay, there’s no difference,” sings Chris Housman. His new song “Blueneck” is the country queer anthem we all needed right now. Especially in the days of heteronormativity in the country music world, we need more truly inclusive songs from a specifically LGBTQ+ perspective. “I’m a good ole boy with a bleeding heart / Just a homegrown hick with a hybrid car,” he continues.
“I think y’all means all and I know we all / Just wanna know that we belong.” Later, Housman also longs for more glass-ceiling shattering and “a world where Black Lives Matter.” Musically, it fits right in line with radio, but we know programmers won’t play it.
