Illicit Ghost can shape shift. Sometimes, she dishes up plaintive, moody ballads. And other times, like with “Higher,” she puts the pedal to the metal with a biting indie-rock song shot through with a ‘80s neons. “Yeah, I’ve been breaking a sweat / I’ve been unusually kind,” she sings.
Drums crack and rip like bolts of lightning, yet her voice remains unwavering and tall. “Suddenly, nothing can bring me down,” she shrugs. “Laying all my fears to rest in the ground…”
