Lizzo is her own genre. Evidenced with “About Damn Time,” her work is groovy and high-pressure and limitless. “Turn up the music / Turn down the lights,” she encourages. Bass thumps hard, and the melody rinses the eardrums with its soothing silkiness. It’s certainly not your run-of-the-mill pop song; rather, it hinges upon a very vintage shimmer, even as her voice pushes the boundaries ever outward. “I’m coming out tonight!” she sashays down her makeshift runway. It’s about damn time we get a song ripe for contention for (the upcoming) Song of the Summer running.
