The inevitability to every friendship is the end. Indie rock musician Calamity the Kid waxes brilliantly melancholic with a song called “All of My Friends Will Die in the End,” which he dubs a “love song.” It’s helplessly nihilistic but cuts to the core of what human existence is really all about. “It’s hard to make friends you know you’ll lose,” he sings. The relationships we have with others define our lives, wrapped around our souls like roses vining up a trellis. There might be thorns at every single turn, but it’s only by passing over those sharp edges that we find the blossoms.
