If you ask XYLØ how her nights have been, she’ll tell you she’s been wide awake, just waiting for the world to end. That’s at least the emotional core to “something to cry about,” a deep cut on her new LP, unamerican beauty. A trembling, insidious darkness flows in deep musical crevices, from the way production sounds like tortured ghosts to the clanging of what feels like a metallic death knell. “Out the back door, I’m a dark horse,” she exhales. Later, she admits to wanting bad things, “If it’s a tragedy, yeah, I want it.”
