Ashley McBryde passes off the microphone to Benjy Davis for “Gospel Night at the Strip Club.” Borrowing hymnal elements, in tone and structure, the track extends a reminder that Jesus would have shown up at the local bar scene. “Jesus loves the drunkards and the whores and the queers,” sings Davis on the chorus. A guitar’s strings are elevated and haunting, backed with startling and moody harmonies. Each verse celebrates someone that’s been cast out by society, from Brandy to Lonnie. In the age of rampant evangelism, it’s an important and urgent song about compassion and understanding the Bible’s message.
