In an era of hyper-religious volatility, more artists are coming out to decry the hypocrisy of modern Christianity. For “Jesus Was a Drag Queen,” Melody Walker enlists Mercy Bell for a song offering up a different (and equally valid) perspective on Jesus Christ of Nazareth. “Jesus was a trans kid,” the duo sings in one of the most incisive lines. Later, their message rings even louder: “Jesus was a radical, preached against hate / Enemy to no one except for the state / Practiced non-violence and maybe that’s why Judas made a deal and He was crucified.” Sing it louder for those in the back!
