Candi Carpenter – “Serial Killer”

If you’ve been itching from some horror-influenced pop music, Candi Carpenter has all the bases covered. Demonology, Part 1 is jam-packed with spookiness, one of the standout tracks being “Serial Killer.” A pop-punk anthem (think: early 2000s guitar strokes), the deep cut finds the singer-songwriter wondering about her boyfriend, who may or may not be a killer. “I’m still scared I’m going to find out you’re a serial killer,” she sings in the pre-chorus. Later, she goes one step further: “What if I wake up in a bathtub full of ice with my heart cut?” she considers over ee-ee-ee screeching ala Psycho. “I’m terrified of the world outside / People, places things, I’m afraid of nouns.” The production swells around her voice, guitars thrashing around in a vat of clanging drums. Her vocal adheres to that throwback punchiness we’ve come to recognize from the punk arena, as well. It’s explosive.
