When you’re in love for the first time, you think it could last a lifetime. But there’s always an inevitable crash and burn. Some love is just not meant to be. With “Love Goes On,” Brett Young looks back to his youth and that love he thought would, well, last a lifetime. He supposes that love cycles; a heartbreak always leads to new love. And it repeats. As the song unravels, the audience learns that only time can heal and that in retrospect, it was just love right for the moment. Nothing more. “But love goes on, pages turn / Ends to songs, lessons learned,” he sings. “Sometimes it’s here and then it’s gone / But that’s okay, love goes on.” Young’s performance will knock the wind from your lungs, it’s that potent.
